    End of the Boards?!

Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 12:55 PM PST [General]

According to inside sources, the boards have been removed due to idiotic behavior by some board members. It must've been pretty serious because there's been some idiots on the boards for a long time. And perhaps not as much use of the boards as necessary to continue offering it. Although, if less usage is one of the causes then I can guess why.

One of the biggest complaints on the boards has been the overwhelming distaste for Vic the Brick. Now I don't know how their ratings are but if the comments about Vic on the boards is any indication then I would say he deters listeners. I know I listen less or not at all while he's on the show. Only during Fusion do I venture a listen because PMS calls out the Loose Cannons on their nonsense. I figure board members gave up posting their hatred for Vic and moved on to more member-friendly boards. In any case, Vic is polarizing and that can't be good for the show.

The lack of a moderator also hurt the boards. For a long time it was like the Wild West, where anything goes. A lot of ridiculous threads and comments that just took up space on the boards. Personal attacks by members to one another also permeated the threads and became a constant distraction from any discussions. Some neutral folks, i'm convinced, got fed up with it. There was no constant oversight for the content and just allowed the boards to run wild like weeds in a lawn.

Now this one is purely speculation but worth noting anyway. There was little or no participation by the on-air personalities. PMS, Money in particular, were good at occassionally posting responses to threads. I understand they can't be constantly engaged in all the nonsense that occurs on the boards but a little input from the hosts would've been a nice gesture to the listeners who preset their radio to 570.

Whatever the case, maybe the boards were out of hand and maybe the format was illsuited for the audience. God knows many of us visit other boards and sites that seem restricting by comparison. Hopefully the boards will return with a better interface and better content. But let's not forget that the station has to do their part and broadcast the best possible programs with knowledgeable and entertaining sports radio hosts. I think both the station and not all board members have not lived up to their end of the deal.

    William the Cowardly (Part 3)

    Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 02:55 PM [General]

Received Dec. 3: Lego suit of armor on a stand.

William had been walking through the forest for only a few minutes before he encountered a strange sight:  a complete suit of knight's armor hanging on a stand.  For a second, William merely stared, unable to comprehend what he was seeing.  Then, with a few cautious footsteps toward the armor, William reached out his spear and lightly poked the breast plate.  Nothing jumped out at him thankfully, but a light breeze carried the foul stench of vomit to William's nose which made him grimace and step back.  Obviously the armor hadn't been sitting there for very long.  Great, William thought.  Now I have to be on the lookout for a naked, puking knight!

    William the Cowardly (Part 2)

    Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 02:54 PM [General]

I'm continuing my challenge to write a continuous story using the pieces of Lego I get every day in a Lego Advent Calendar.

Received Dec. 2: Lego gateway. (They aren't going to make this easy on me, are they? haha)

One day, William was called to the west gate at the edge of the village to investigate strange noises.  The villagers near the forest here claimed to have heard moaning and screaming in the early hours of the morning, which was unusual and worrisome for such a peaceful area.  Without hesitation, William grabbed his spear (the only weapon he was allowed because he was considered such a lowly soldier), and rushed into the forest.  He feared that some evil may have befallen Lycanestra, the only villager who actually lived in the forest near the west gate.  The only woman who'd ever held his heart, even if she didn't realize it.

    .:K-FED ON BRITNEY

Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 03:54 PM EST [General]

K-Fed is on the cover of the new People Magazine and gives them a nice little interview about Britney and the boys. Here's some highlights....

Do you remember when you first met Britney?
I met her at a club in Hollywood, Joseph's. Our eyes met and that was it. We just hit it off right away. I learned real fast how much of a whirlwind the press and everything was.

What are your happiest memories of the marriage?
Well, getting married. I never thought that I would get married but it wound up happening. That was a really, really, happy, exciting moment. I pretty much realized that I was giving my life to her, and I was doing it without question.

    What went wrong?
It's hard enough to be in a marriage, and then have a kid, then kids, it changes everything. For me, I'd become more concerned with my children. Not that I ignored Britney, but my kids are always most important ... I mean, we were having complications. I didn't give her an ultimatum, but I was trying to work stuff out with her, and she didn't even talk to me or anything and went behind my back and filed [for divorce]. [I was] completely blindsided.

A lot of people assumed you fought for custody of the kids because of money. My first question to [my lawyer] was, "Am I ever going to be able to see my children?" I told him that I would spend every last dime that I had to make sure that my children are okay. That's all that mattered. I didn't know how much power Britney had. That really scared me.

How did you react in January when Britney locked herself in the bathroom with Jayden and was later taken to the hospital on a gurney?
That whole night is a blur. You want to talk about one of my lowest points of depression, that was probably one of them. I was very, very worried for her 'cause I care about her. That's the mother of my children. Just because I'm not in love with her doesn't mean that I don't love her. I'm definitely rooting for her. There's nothing more that I want than for her to be in the best health and doing what she loves to do.

    Are things getting better?
Oh, man, it's totally turning around. It works out that [the kids] get to see her. There's structure over there, there's structure at my house. We're trying to keep the same type of schedule. It doesn't have to be completely perfect, but the foundation is there.

    Interesting Ocho Cinco stuff

Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 03:53 PM EST [General]

Chad Ocho Cinco was asked if it's mind-boggling that the Bengals are so bad?

"At this point, nothing’s mind-boggling at this point, nothing surprises me at this point. It is what it is."

Did you think you were going to have a big day after catching the first pass? "No, I didn’t. We’re in week 200 and I haven’t had a big day by now, I didn’t think a big day was coming anytime soon."

"I just thought this season was just another slow start, which I always do, I start slow and pick up as time goes on. The big plays always come, but for some reason we haven’t been able to make the big play all season long and we haven’t been able to win. In order to win in the NFL, you have to have big plays at some point. They haven’t come and I think that’s one of the reasons we’re down."

Is it anything you can put your finger on? "I don’t have enough fingers to put them on what’s wrong right now. I only have 10 of them and there’s more than 10 reasons why we’re not successful on offense and I’m one of them. I point to myself first."

Chad was asked about his injuries, and seemed to throw Ryan Fitzpatrick under the bus: "I’m fine. I’m fine, everyone plays with injuries, that’s not excuse. I’m still able to do what I can, and I get open, I’m really good at that. Really good at getting open. It’s just been unfortunate. Our MVP this year has got to be Housh, despite the injury, everything going on, the quarterback change, he’s found a way to get it done. He’s hurt in his ribs, his ankle, his hair -- it’s getting gray. He’s still managing to make plays game in and game out."

    Finally Finished

Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 08:52 PM GMT [General]

    Wow!

I finally finished my clock and it turned out exactly the way I wanted it to.

It has a whimsical saying on it "Just give me the WINE and no one gets hurt". If you like this, check out my Wine Bling charm rings for wine glasses.

I recycled a 12 inch in diameter round glass serving tray/serving platter that has 3 silver toned grape "feet". Hangs on the wall quite nicely. Pearl green polymer clay nail caps. Satin sheen finish on the matte paper.

I hope whoever purchases this will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!

William the Cowardly: A Lego Aventure in Small Pieces

    Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 02:51 PM [General]

Okay, so a couple months ago I wrote about a Lego set Doug managed to score seemingly against the odds. He and I were super excited about the fact that we actually managed to get a hold of two copies of a nearly impossible find set, but we decided to hold off opening our bounty until December because this particular set is an advent calendar. However, to make this all a little more interesting, we also decided to take pictures of what we got each day and post a little about each item. Sounds fairly simple, yes, but it's a little more complicated than that. See, we've sorta issued each other a challenge. We take the pictures and then write a CONTINUOUS STORY BASED ON WHATEVER PIECE WE GET EACH DAY. As in, we start with whatever we get on the first day and build onto the story with each piece we get until we hit the last day, December 25. Then we must conclude the story in any way possible. Of course, there is no way to GUARANTEE what we write will actually be good or even interesting haha, but we thought it would be fun if nothing else :D

For the sake of context, this is the set I'm talking about.

Received on Dec. 1: Lego soldier.

Once upon a time there was a young solider by the name of William.  William was a humble man of humble means and he lived a very humble life at the edge of the forest.  But William, like most young men his age, secretly dreamed of more.  In fact, this was one of the reasons he'd pledged service to the King as soon as he was of age.  But after six years as a lowly soldier enslaved to the crown, William had still not found the adventure he'd been seeking and his spirit had begun to shrivel.  See, while the rest of the young lads had gone off to do great things and see great sights, William had yet to leave his own village.  His peers often made fun of him, calling him "William the Cowardly," and "William the Simple," though William had never run from a fight.  He'd never even been given the chance.  Instead he served in defense of his peaceful village, stationed just where he lived.  In the middle of nowhere.

    Thanksgiving in the Smokies

Thursday, December 4, 2008, 02:47 AM [Family Memories]

We just returned from a mini vacation to the Smokey Mountains.  Gatlinburg has been our Thanksgiving destination for over 20 years.  We love the hustle and bustle of the holiday crowd there --- if you don't have the Christmas spirit when you get there, you certainly will when you leave!

Our favorite place to is is the Old Mill in Pigeon Forge.  This is a "must do" if you are ever in the area.  It is so wonderful to look out over the water at night, especially if there is snow falling!

Quixote and the facts of life.

Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 02:46 PM CST [General]

When did the facts of life first enter literature? I mean the basic facts of life - like if you don't pay your bills you get into serious trouble. At first literature dealt with gods, and they had no money problems. Then there were godlike heroes who simply took what they wanted and filled their ships with slaves and booty. There follow several centuries filled mostly with the lives of saints and hermits, to whom worldly goods were of no interest. With the medieval literature of chivalry a new kind of hero arrived, the high-minded knight whose attention was fastened on the glory of dying in battle for an ideal. No room for humdrum daily concerns here.

Then about halfway through the sixteenth century, at the height of the humanist Renaissance, appeared a ragged hungry boy called Lazarillo de Tormes guiding his blind master along the roads and through the towns of Castille. Two features of this anonymous tale were new and remarkable. First, the narrative was told in the first person. Second, not only did the hero, or rather anti-hero, have no money, but not having it was a real problem for him. The untidy, seething, chaotically colorful world of the picaresque was born. It's a world no one had seen before in quite this form. The feudal social order was in decay, towns and taverns were filled with the dregs of wars and conflict trying to survive from day to day through wit and trickery. Into this world, in 1547, was born Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. He was to learn the facts of life at the age of four, when his father, a surgeon, was imprisoned for debt in Valladolid and had all his goods confiscated.

Cervantes' own life was to proceed from one misfortune to another. His early career as poet and author came to an abrupt end, possibly as a result of a duel forcing him into exile in Rome. He became a soldier of fortune, and was badly wounded in the battle of Lepanto in 1571. Then among other adventures he found himself imprisoned in Algiers for five years, captive of the Berber king for a ransom that his family could not possibly afford. Money is yet again intimately linked with freedom, a recurring theme for him over the years. Back in Spain, he led a life that can best be described as one of inventive survival, dogged by legal claims, debts and again, in 1597, imprisonment in Seville. He seems to have made good use of these months in prison to progress with his novel, Don Quixote de la Mancha, and with innovative plans for its publication.

Early in 1605, his fortunes appeared finally to change with the instant success of Don Quixote, though by the end of the same year, he was back in prison for spurious reasons, having acquired a reputation as troublemaker. Nonetheless Cervantes' gamble in publishing his book as a commercial venture, going straight to the marketplace, would soon pay off, and before long both he and his hero, the ingenious hidalgo, would leave their mark on literature with a creation born of pure imagination, acted out in a world as solid as the windmills that bring Don Quixote crashing to the ground.

"That Cervantes is a great friend of mine," quips the priest in Don Quixote's village, finding one of Cervantes' own books on Quixote's bookshelf, "he knows more about reverses than he does about verses." Here is the other face of the modern world as we know it. Following the new humanism of Lazarillo de Tormes, Cervantes brings up the complex issues arising from self-consciousness, the dimension of irony, even self-deprecation. In the person of Don Quixote himself, this self-consciousness shows as melancholy, the mood in which the ingenioso hidalgo approaches his end.

Yet Cervantes rescues us from a potential and terrible pit of cynicism through finding his characters' redemption as individuals. Neither Don Quixote nor Sancho Panza is truly mad, but they are human, noble, absurd, caring, confused, often mistaken, like ourselves, in a real world governed by the facts of life. This year we celebrate the 400th anniversary of that literary redemption of humanity.

Chicago's Parking Meters Are Hungry...Fees To Increase

    From The Red Eye....

If you plan to park at a meter anywhere in Chicago, get ready to carry plenty of change: Rates will quadruple next month for most spots in the city.

At most meters, where a single quarter now buys 60 minutes, the charge will spike to $1 per hour. And by 2013, it will cost $2 an hour to park in those same spaces.

The most expensive spots downtown will increase from $3 an hour to $6.50 in the next five years under a lease deal Mayor Daley announced Tuesday.

The $3-an-hour fee to park at prime Loop spots increases to $3.50, effective as soon as Jan. 1. After that, the price goes up 75 cents a year through 2013, when it hits $6.50 an hour. Elsewhere downtown, the $1 an hour will double to $2 next year and hit $4 an hour in 2013.

In city neighborhoods, the rate jumps to $1 an hour, with an extra quarter tacked on each year through 2013, when the price reaches $2 an hour.

City officials said rates on many meters had not been increased in more than 20 years. But the increases come on top of a blizzard of other recent tax and fee increases that make it more expensive to live and play downtown.

After Cook County leaders pushed the sales tax in Chicago to 10.25 percent--as high as anywhere in the country--the city's new budget includes an expansion of red-light cameras, more aggressive booting of cars with unpaid parking tickets and higher taxes on downtown parking garages and tickets to sporting events and shows. That trend wasn't lost on drivers hunting for parking spots Tuesday.

"It just never stops," said Mark Devino, who dashes outside his Lakeview pizzeria every two hours to feed the meter. "We're getting hit from every angle."

Despite the rate hikes, Daley hailed the parking meter plan as an innovative approach to surviving the city's deepening budget woes. A private company has agreed to give City Hall an upfront payment of almost $1.2 billion to run Chicago's parking meter system for the next 75 years.

Even that windfall won't come close to solving the Daley administration's budget problems, however. Daley projects shortfalls of at least $200 million a year for several years to come.

"That could grow. That could get much bigger" if the nation's economic recession worsens, he said.

The City Council's Finance Committee is scheduled to debate the parking meter lease agreement Wednesday, with a final vote of the full council expected Thursday. Aldermen have given quick and overwhelming approval to all of Daley's groundbreaking privatization efforts in recent years, eagerly accepting enormous checks for long-term leases of the Chicago Skyway toll road ($1.83 billion), downtown parking garages ($563 million) and Midway ($2.5 billion).

That big money for City Hall has meant higher costs for the public. Under private operators, it costs 50 percent more to drive on the Skyway and almost 40 percent more to leave your car at Millennium Park's garage.

Daley dodged questions Tuesday about what other assets the city could rent for cash: "We're not going to be telling you this now."

The mayor's plan for spending the parking-meter money is an about-face from a year ago, when he rejected the notion of using any of the money from the long-term lease to help deal with immediate budget gaps.

On Tuesday, Daley said $400 million from the parking meter deal will go into a long-term reserve, but $325 million will be spent to shore up city budgets through 2012. Another $324 million is headed toward a fund officials said "may be used to help bridge the period until the nation's economy begins to grow again." The city also is earmarking $100 million for programs helping low-income people.

The winning bid for the parking meters came from a company formed largely by three infrastructure funds run by New York-based Morgan Stanley, which also won the lease for downtown city-owned garages in 2006.

The mayor's nephew, William Daley Jr., works for Morgan Stanley and lobbies state and Cook County officials on the firm's behalf. Morgan Stanley spokeswoman Marie Ali said he had no involvement in the Chicago deal.

The Daley administration said the winners merely offered the biggest check of any qualified bidder.

50 Cent Feeling Affects Of Recession Too...

G-Unit general 50 Cent made tons of money in 2007, including an estimated $150 million from the sale of Glaceau Vitamin Water to Coca Cola, but even the filthy rich are feeling the pinch these days. 50 Cent told the Canadian Press, "I lost a couple million dollars already. I sit with my investors and business managers and accountants looking at the numbers and I'm like, 'Yo, the values of stocks in different areas that I invested in are decreasing!' So I take the loss like everybody else."

50 Cent is also feeling the crunch on the real estate end as he's had his Connecticut mansion up for sale since 2007 for $18.5 million. The mansion, which he bought from Mike Tyson's ex-wife for $4.1 million in 2003, has 19 bedrooms, 37 bathrooms, stripper poles, and a 40-person hot tub.

As 50 Cent preps for the release of his fourth solo album, Before I Self Destruct, he's confident that he's going to be around for a long time. The rapper said, "Even if I'm not as relevant as I was when I dropped Get Rich or Die Tryin, five years from now I'll still be creating a platform for new artists to come through."

Controversy Surrounds Busta Rhymes' Single "Arab Money"

Busta Rhymes' new single, "Arab Money" featuring Ron Browz, may be getting a lot of spins in the clubs but everyone isn't feeling the song. Allhiphop.com reports that DJ Steve "Smooth" Sutherland played the song during his show, which airs in the United Kingdom and Scotland, on Saturday, November 29th, and was later suspended by his employers at Galaxy Radio. The company is owned by Global Radio.

A representative for Galaxy confirmed that there were several complaints about the song, and that Sutherland and the show's producer were suspended. The company issued a statement that read, "Galaxy would like to apologize to all our listeners for the airing of this song. It was never Galaxy's intent to offend its listeners and never will be. A full internal investigation has now commenced. Galaxy would like to apologize for any offense, however unintentionally caused."

Prior to Sutherland's suspension, Rhymes commented on the controversy, saying, "The most irrelevant thing can be justified as a reason to fire somebody nowadays. Ain't nobody safe. This recession has f***ed the whole game up and everybody is on they eggshells when they walk around. So I just feel like, that's really more so what it's about than anything else and until I start to get some direct awareness of the Arab culture having an issue, ya know, we're going to continue to move forward with our campaign."

Rhymes added, "I really only respect the Arab culture. I ain't really trying to pay no attention to, ya know, these little people in political positions and executive positions that ain't Arab culture oriented people because a lot of the times, what are you really showing all of this concern for? Is it really concern for the people or concern for your job?"

Rhymes recently recorded a remix of the song that features verses by Akon, Sean "Diddy" Combs, T-Pain, Ron Browz, Swizz Beatz and Lil Wayne.

Jay-Z Releases Single From Upcoming "Notoroious" Soundtrack

The soundtrack for the new Notorious B.I.G. biopic, Notorious, is scheduled to hit stores on January 13th through Bad Boy Records. MTV.com reports that one song from the soundtrack has already been leaked although the project is far from complete. "Brooklyn (We Go Hard)" by Jay-Z featuring Santogold debuted at urban radio this week and has been getting a strong response. The song was produced by Kanye West.

The rest of the soundtrack is still coming together but it appears that the Notorious B.I.G.'s son, Christopher "CJ" Wallace Jr., may turn up on the soundtrack on a remake of "One More Chance." According to the Wallace family, CJ, who plays a young Notorious BIG in the movie, would be rapping on the song with his dad.

Notorious hits theaters nationwide on January 16th.

Bulls Can't Repeat, Lose To 76ers

Andre Miller scored nine of his season-high 28 points in overtime Tuesday night and the Philadelphia 76ers ended their four-game losing streak with a 103-95 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Andre Iguodala added 25 points and Elton Brand had 22 points and 14 rebounds as the Sixers avenged a loss to the Bulls two days ago in Philadelphia.

Derrick Rose led Chicago with 24 points and Ben Gordon added 18. Tyrus Thomas had 14 points and 13 boards.

Thomas' thunderous followup dunk tied at 90 with 17.6 seconds left in regulation.

The Sixers had the last shot, but after holding the ball and running down the clock, Iguodala drove the lane and fed in the corner to Miller, whose shot was short.

But in overtime Miller took over. He had a three-point play and then a soft jumper to give Philadelphia a 99-92 lead.

Philly, which led by 15 Sunday before losing to the Bulls 103-92, had a 16-point cushion Tuesday and was also ahead by nine in the fourth quarter before Chicago rallied.

But this time the Sixers held on.

Brand's jump hook gave the Sixers a 79-70 lead in regulation. Iguodala's drive along the base line and thundering dunk kept the lead at seven with three minutes remaining.

Rose drove for a bank shot and Drew Gooden's two free throws after a nifty pass from Rose brought the Bulls to within two with 1:15 to play.

Thomas blocked a shot by Miller but then was called for an offensive foul at the other end with 40 seconds remaining.

But a driving Iguodala lost the ball under the basket with 23.9 seconds to go and the Bulls had a last chance. After a timeout Rose, drove the basket and missed but Thomas followed it up with a slam to tie the game with 17.6 seconds to go.

Iguodala's three-point play and then steal and dunk in the final seconds of the third quarter highlighted a strong 12-2 finish for the 76ers as they took a 67-61 lead.

Looking flat after a seven-game road trip that ended Sunday with the victory over the Sixers in Philly, the Bulls fell behind by 10 after a listless first quarter in which they had eight turnovers and shot 33 percent.

Philadelphia went up 30-14 in the second quarter. But the Bulls chopped away and after a rally that saw them shoot 58 percent in the second period, they actually had a chance for the halftime lead before Andres Nocioni's baseline jumper was long with about half a minute left.
